Homicide Defense Task Force

A homicide charge is the most serious accusation a person can face, and the first hours matter. Every year, The Legal Aid Society’s Homicide Defense Task Force (HDTF) represents more than 200 people charged with homicide across New York City. From the moment we are assigned, our clients have an experienced defense team standing beside them.

From the very beginning of every case, HDTF brings together trial attorneys, investigators, mitigation specialists, and paralegal case handlers. Every client gets this team, on every case. This approach allows us to investigate immediately, preserve critical evidence, understand our clients’ circumstances, and begin building a defense when it matters most.

Our Work

Our Impact

After a lengthy trial, a jury returned not guilty verdicts on all charges for a young client who had been facing serious allegations for several years.

The case arose from a tragic incident that resulted in the death of an individual who attempted to help someone in danger. Prosecutors argued that our client should be held responsible, but the defense challenged those claims and focused the jury on the evidence.

An important part of this case was securing the client’s release while the case was pending. Being out of custody allowed him to continue his education, spend time with family, and actively participate in preparing his defense.

Since his release, he has spoken about his goals for the future, including continuing his education and building a positive path forward. The verdict allows him to pursue those opportunities without the burden of these charges.

This outcome reflects the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of everyone involved in the defense. Most importantly, it is a life-changing result for our client, and a reminder of the impact effective advocacy can have both inside and outside the courtroom.
