Making Our Website an Accessible Experience for All Users

The Legal Aid Society believes that all New Yorkers deserve the right to equal justice. As a result, we’re committed to making our website an accessible and inclusive experience for every user who visits it.

Actions We’ve Taken

To make this a reality, we recently conducted an accessibility audit which compiled live user test results and best practices from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level AA.

We engaged an expert accessibility consultant, Accessible360, to conduct this audit and provide recommendations to make our website’s content, design, and functionality more accessible. Their extensive audit resulted in the following significant improvements to the accessibility of our website experience:

  • Our site now uses high-contrast focus indicators on links, buttons, and form fields to make it easy for users to navigate with keyboards.
  • Website content uses appropriate headings, lists, paragraphs, and other formatting features, making our site easy to explore for users with assistive technology.
  • Using alt attributes, <label> tags, and other techniques, our website helps users with screen readers access and engage with content.
  • Visual labels and assistive placeholder text empower users with cognitive disabilities to easily respond to form fields and other site elements.

With these and other changes in place, we believe The Legal Aid Society’s website has become a friendlier place for all of our users.
