The Legal Aid Society joined The American Immigration Council and other immigration rights groups in an amicus brief submitted Tuesday to the Supreme Court that argues previously deported immigrants who reenter the country and have pending claims for protection are entitled to a bond hearing under an interpretation of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, as reported by Law360.

“The protection granted in a withholding-only proceeding is about more than determining the rights of the particular individual involved; it is also about honoring the promises the United States has made to the international community,” the brief reads in part.

The American Immigration Council, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Asylum Defense Project, the Bronx Defenders, Brooklyn Defender Services, the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, the Legal Aid Society, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services and the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network have also signed onto the document.
