Twyla Carter, a former public defender and nationally recognized expert on bail reform and litigating race, became the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as Attorney-in-Chief and CEO. Building on the work of her predecessors, she continues to propel Legal Aid onto the national stage and leads local efforts to improve policies and programs that protect and improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers.
