The Legal Aid Society won an emergency temporary restraining order in its class-action lawsuit requiring the Federal Government to provide detailed reunification plans to children who were separated from their parents by the Administration and detained in New York State. This success gave our young clients an opportunity to consult with their parents before the plan was effectuated.
The city-wide Decarceration Project, a litigation and policy initiative of The Legal Aid Society, was formed. The Project works to ending the mass incarceration of low-income New Yorkers and eradicating the criminal legal system’s disproportionate impact on communities of color, helps New Yorkers navigate the inequities of the money bail system, and provides assistance to sentenced people who have had their sentences calculated incorrectly.
