Ellen Davidson, a staff attorney at The Legal Aid Society, appeared on WNYC’s The Capitol Pressroom to discuss the status of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s moratorium on evictions, which he extended last week to September 4th.
Legal Aid and housing advocates have slammed the month-by-month approach to the crisis as inadequate and called for the moratorium to be extended indefinitely in order to protect hundreds of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers in the midst of a pandemic of truly national proportions.
“The number of tenants across this country who will be evicted if state local and federal government officials do nothing is staggering,” Davidson said, “and the impact it will have on not only those families but our economy, is immeasurable. We can’t get out of this financial crisis if 30 million Americans are homeless.”
