New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended the state’s moratorium on evictions today, guaranteeing that no one will be evicted from their homes through August 20th, according to Curbed.
While many renters breathed a sigh of relief at the news, defender organizations are warning that without additional housing relief measures, many New Yorkers suffering financial hardships due to the COVID-19 shutdown will still be at risk of eviction once the moratorium is lifted.
“The governor must go farther,” says Ellen Davidson, a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society. “We welcome the extension of the eviction moratorium, but make no mistake, it doesn’t stop tenants from being at risk.”
