The Legal Aid Society and partner tenant’s rights advocates are sounding the alarm over a potential avalanche of evictions that may follow the lifting of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s eviction moratorium, as reported by The Appeal.
While the moratorium has been credited with keeping New Yorkers safe in their homes at a time of unprecedented social distancing, there is nothing to stop landlords from initiating eviction proceedings against tenants who have been financially wrecked by the outbreak once the pandemic crisis subsides.
“The eviction moratorium gets lifted, but it doesn’t mean that day people get their jobs back and have the ability to pay rent,” Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society, noted. “In 10 days, you could lose your home.”
