Ellen Davidson, a housing attorney at The Legal Aid Society, appeared on WCNY’s The Capitol Pressroom to discuss this week’s passage of New York’s $2.4 billion dollar rent relief program – as well as who will qualify for access to the funds.
The program will be administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and will cover up to 12 months of unpaid rent and utilities accrued since March 13, 2020, for those who are eligible.
Giving the program an A-minus grade, Davidson noted that the relief program “should cover a significant portion of the money that is owed [by struggling tenants].”
“The state has a huge incentive to pay out money as quickly as possible,” Davidson said. “There’s going to be an immense amount of applications that the agency will have to process to start giving out the money, but I think this program is setting the agency up for success.”
