LAS Responds to AG James’s Report on NYPD's Reaction to Protests

NY Attorney General Letitia James has recommended a slate of police reforms as part of her ongoing probe into the George Floyd-inspired clashes that have erupted between cops and protesters in the past several weeks.

The move follows an investigation into allegations of aggressive tactics and police misconduct levied against the NYPD by protesters, many of which were notably caught on video and achieved viral status through social media. The report of the investigation was released Wednesday, and concludes that the public must have more oversight of department policies, structure and leadership, according to the New York Daily News.

“The Attorney General’s damning report confirms the immediate need for deep, structural changes to address not only the New York City Police Department’s violent crackdown of the demonstrations that followed the killing of George Floyd, but the Department’s longstanding history of discriminatory policing and systemic failure to hold police officers accountable for patterns of racist and abusive policing,” said Corey Stoughton, Attorney-in-Charge of the Special Litigation Unit with the criminal defense practice at The Legal Aid Society.
