Watch: The Myth of Equal Justice, Fighting to Balance The Scales

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and CEO of The Legal Aid Society, recently joined Alfred Edmond Jr. on an episode on Black Enterprise’s Beyond the Hype to discuss inequity in the criminal legal system.

Black Enterprise Magazine is a leading resource for essential business information and advice for professionals, corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and decision makers. It connects 4.3 million readers on a personal level with African Americans who are serious about success.

Carter discussed the imbalance in funding that plagues public defenders across the country, nowhere more so than in New York City.

“The NYPD has 30 times the budget we do,” she explained. “The need for funding our mission of defending low-income New Yorkers is about fairness, it’s about giving people a fair chance at justice.”
