Twyla Carter Tops Nonprofit Power 100 List

Congratulations to Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, who has been ranked number one on City and State’s 2022 Nonprofit Power 100 list.

The Nonprofit Power 100, a partnership between City & State and its sister publication, New York Nonprofit Media, identifies the sector’s most important and effective leaders. It also highlights top government officials and heads of major philanthropies whose funding and oversight drive the work of New York’s nonprofits.

Carter joined Legal Aid in August, becoming the first Black woman and first Asian American to serve in this role in its over 145-year history. In her short tenure, she has led the organization’s ongoing efforts to ensure the City complies with right to shelter laws as migrants are bused to New York from southern states and immersed herself in Legal Aid’s work to combat the ongoing crisis in City jails. She has also engaged from day one on the critical issues of funding fairness and pay parity with City attorneys.

“This recognition belongs to the dedicated individuals who make up the Legal Aid Society,” said Carter. “I feel lucky to have joined an organization so fiercely committed to the clients and communities we serve. The opportunity to lead and support our attorneys and staff at this critical moment is an honor.”
