Twyla Carter Reflects on Two Years at LAS

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, reflects on two years leading the organization in a new op-ed for the New York Law Journal.

Carter touched on many aspects of Legal Aid’s work across the Civil, Criminal Defense, and Juvenile Rights practices, including protections for those facing evictions and an agreement to preserve New York City’s right to shelter protections. She hailed a settlement to reform the NYPD’s violent conduct towards protesters and stressed the importance of Legal Aid’s work ongoing work to bring independent control over City jails. She also highlighted Legal Aid’s work on behalf of young clients in foster care who are being denied monetary benefits to which they are entitled.

Carter emphasized that securing funding to ensure higher salaries, manageable caseloads, and up-to-date technology remains a top priority for the organization moving forward.

“The Legal Aid Society is a bulwark for voiceless individuals, families, and communities and improves society at large by empowering and uplifting those who need our help the most,” she writes. “The direct and systemic impacts we have on the lives of New Yorkers are immeasurable, and I’m truly honored and humbled to lead this storied institution.”
