The Legal Aid Society hailed the success of the newly enacted rent laws, which went into effect on June 14, 2019, and New York City’s Right to Counsel program in housing court, each of which has contributed to a steady decline in executed evictions in New York City, per data from the City, reports the Queens Daily Eagle.

Legal Aid compared eviction data from January 1, 2020 through January 31, 2020, to the same window from 2019. For January, 2020, 1,598 evictions have been executed by New York City Marshalls compared to 2,060 from January 1, 2019 – January 31, 2019 – a reduction of 462 evictions or 25 percent.

“Evictions continue to plunge and New Yorkers are remaining in their homes since these common sense measures were put in place,” said Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society.
