New York City housing advocates and elected leaders are sounding the alarm over a potential tsunami of evictions that may follow once Gov. Cuomo’s Executive Order on the eviction moratorium expires. In a New York Daily News op-ed, Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of our Civil Law Reform Unit, and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) warn of 50,000 potential eviction cases after June 20, when the moratorium is expected to end.
While the moratorium has kept New Yorkers safe in their homes throughout the COVID-19 crisis, it does nothing to address the widespread shortfall in rent payment that residents have incurred through the city-mandated social distancing shutdown. Without taking concrete steps to provide relief, many of these now-jobless residents will have no protection against landlords initiating eviction proceedings for non-payment.
“It is unconscionable to allow the eviction of a single person or family during this unprecedented crisis,” they write. “If we allow this to happen it will be a stain on our city and state and a grim example of inhumanity.”
