“The Legal Aid Society was designated by the City of New York as the primary defender in State Criminal Courts. The Criminal Appeals Bureau had another major victory in the U.S, Supreme Court in Baxstrom v. Herold (383 U.S. 107), which affected the rights of all incarcerated people who because of alleged mental illness, were automatically kept in mental institutions upon expiration of their criminal sentences.
