Attorneys in The Legal Aid Society’s Immigration Law Unit are calling on candidates for New York City’s upcoming mayoral race to address the concerns of the city’s 3.1 million immigrants and clarify their positions on issues affecting their lives, as reported by City Limits.
Central to immigration rights advocate’s concerns is the continuation of budgetary support for the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), an advocacy program for detained immigrants facing deportation.
For Hasan Shafiqullah, Attorney-in-Charge of The Legal Aid Society’s Immigration Law Unit, it is important that these types of programs continue. Right now, NYIFUP is “is a Council discretionary program,” says Shafiqullah, meaning it is subject to annual budget anxiety.
