The leaders of some of New York’s largest labor unions are throwing their support behind “Good Cause” eviction legislation, as reported by Gothamist.

Fourteen unions, including 1199SEIU which represents the support staff of The Legal Aid Society, sent a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul demanding she prioritizes the passage of the statewide protections.

The “Good Cause” eviction bill would require landlords to demonstrate a good reason for evicting tenants in non-rent-stabilized units. The proposed law would also protect tenants from exorbitant rent hikes and allow individuals to advocate for repairs without the fear of retaliation.

“The eviction moratorium has expired in New York State, and hundreds of thousands of people may soon face housing court. Good Cause Eviction provides the necessary legal framework for landlords and tenants to navigate the eviction process fairly,” their letter reads in part. “As court cases begin to move forward, Good Cause is what is needed to protect working class tenants from price-gouging, speculative displacement, and discriminatory evictions. It allows landlords to recoup a fair investment in their properties and pursue non-payment and other necessary eviction cases.”
