Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, has been named to City & State’s annual Women Power 100 list.
The list shines a spotlight on the influential women in New York’s world of politics and policy. It features top leaders in government, business, nonprofit heads, advocates, and more.
During Twyla’s tenure, Legal Aid’s attorneys and staff have worked tirelessly to serve the needs of low-income New Yorkers. In the past year, they have achieved significant victories, including a court ruling that appointed a remediation manager to oversee Rikers Island, a crucial first step in ending the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has plagued the facility.
Immigration attorneys won an injunction blocking the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport our immigrant neighbors, and advocacy on behalf of Legal Aid’s youngest clients moved forward legislation to reform the flawed system of anonymous reporting to Child Protective Services.
Since day one, Carter has worked relentlessly since joining the organization to improve contract procurement and payments and securing additional funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff.
Congratulations to Twyla; read the full list here.
