The Criminal Appeals Bureau scored significant victories in the U.S. Supreme Court in LaRuffa v. New York and in Lefkowitz v. Newsome (420 U.S. 283), which upheld the ability, in New York State, of a defendant to plead guilty without giving up the right to judicial review of constitutional issues, such as the lawfulness of a search or the voluntariness of a confession, though a federal habeas corpus proceeding.
