Jimenez v. CAMBA, Inc.

The Legal Aid Society filed this lawsuit against supportive housing provider CAMBA, Inc. on behalf of disabled tenants who are unable to retain supportive housing because the organization fails to reasonably accommodate their needs. Instead, CAMBA seeks to evict these tenants (the very people whom it purports to protect), readily taking default judgments in Housing Court against those who do not file answers or who do not appear on a scheduled court date, despite CAMBA’s full knowledge that the defaulting tenant suffers from disabilities, and without alerting the court to the tenant’s likely inability to defend themselves in the proceeding. We argue that CAMBA’s conduct violates the Fair Housing Act, New York State Human Rights Law, and the New York City Human Rights Law. The case is ongoing.
