The Legal Aid Society filed this class action lawsuit on behalf of disabled New Yorkers denied meaningful access to Disaster SNAP (D-SNAP) benefits by New York City and State after Superstorm Sandy. D-SNAP is a federal public benefits program designed to provide temporary food assistance to individuals affected by disaster. The case challenged local D-SNAP requirements that applications be filed either in-person in Brooklyn or Staten Island or through an authorized representative. In 2015, we entered into a settlement agreement in which the City agreed to establish remote disaster benefits sites, to set up a system for home visits by officials during a disaster, and to allow eligible New Yorkers to re-apply for the benefit.
