Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society, reflects on four years leading the organization in a new op-ed for the New York Law Journal.

Carter touched on many aspects of Legal Aid’s work across the Civil, Criminal Defense, and Juvenile Rights practices, including an agreement with the Mamdani Administration that secured $175 million to expand rental assistance for New Yorkers in shelter and those at risk of homelessness.

“Reimagining justice means more than confronting the crises before us today, she writes. “It means having the imagination to envision something better and the determination to make it real.”

“As I begin my fifth year at Legal Aid, I know the challenges ahead will be formidable. But after 150 years, our mission remains as urgent as ever,” she continued. “We will continue ensuring that Legal Aid has the tools, talent, and resources to fight for the next generation of New Yorkers because justice should be expected, not exceptional.”
