The COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented impact on New York City and the everyday lives of millions of New Yorkers. The crisis has further focused the organization’s efforts to advocate for the needs of New York’s marginalized communities. In this most challenging year, the staff of The Legal Aid Society were game-changers, innovating and creating new ways to defend, advocate on behalf of, and act as an ally the people we serve, seeking the release of medically vulnerable people on Rikers Island, assisting families with housing, employment and benefits issues, and holding NYPD accountable for the repeated pattern of indiscriminately brutalizing peaceful protesters.
