LAS Joins Coalition to Secure Fair Wages, Benefits for Independent Contractors

A group of labor advocates – including The Legal Aid Society – today announced the formation of a coalition that seeks to impose a new standard in New York for what qualifies as an “independent contractor,” reports POLITICO New York. The coalition takes aim at gig economy companies who refuse to provide employee benefits to workers because they are viewed as independent contractors, not actual employees, specifically transportation companies such as Uber.

Other members of the coalition include the Service Employees International Union, Local 32BJ, New York Taxi Workers Alliance, New York Nail Salon Workers Association, Make the Road New York and the National Employment Law Project.
