LAS Urges Cuts in NYPD to Sustain Funding for Police Watchdog

The Legal Aid Society decried newly-announced cuts to the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), the police watchdog agency responsible for investigating NYPD misconduct. The news comes months after an Independent Budget Office report found that CCRB’s staff shortage prevented it from properly overseeing reports of misbehavior by the NYPD.

Legal Aid also called for the CCRB’s budget to be replenished by defunding the police department, according to the New York Daily News.

“If anything, City Hall should increase funding for the 200-person agency to ensure proper oversight of such a large police department rife with misconduct,” said Molly Griffard of the Cop Accountability Project at The Legal Aid Society. “But even if City Hall disagrees, an overwhelming majority of New York City voters mandated more funding for the CCRB in last November’s charter revisions. City Hall should make up the difference by cutting the NYPD budget to fully fund the CCRB.”
