Watch: LAS Informs Tenants on Their Housing Rights During COVID-19

The eviction moratorium in New York State expires on October 1, and all evictions are prohibited until then. Yet some landlords have tried to remove their tenants, according to NY1 Noticias.

Edda Santiago, a housing attorney with The Legal Aid Society’s housing office, shared know your rights information about what tenants—including those who are undocumented—can do to protect themselves.

“Even though the eviction moratorium protects tenants until October 1st, many New Yorkers may not be informed of what their legal rights are and, secondly, they might be scared because they are undocumented and their landlord is aware, so they feel even more vulnerable,” said Santiago told the outlet.  “However, the moratorium is in place until the 1st and that applies to a variety of housing cases, including holdovers. If you have questions, you can reach out to us or 311 for help.”
