LAS Implores Albany to Address Impending Eviction Disaster

The Legal Aid Society reaffirmed the need for Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature to address New York’s looming evictions crisis, as reported by Curbed NY.

With the statewide eviction moratorium set to expire in less than six weeks, over 14,500 households in New York City whose pre-COVID housing case resulted in an eviction warrant quickly could lose their homes. Legal Aid called on Albany to follow the example of neighboring states whose governors enacted moratoriums to hold families over through the pandemic.

“These numbers are kind of unimaginable. We’ve never faced anything like this in our history,” said Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Practice Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society. “I went through 9/11 and Sandy, and, truthfully, I thought that was as bad as it was ever going to get. Now I realize I was completely wrong. And we really are not prepared for that as a city and a state.”
