LAS Troubled by Latest NYPD Misconduct Records Release

A trove of Staten Island NYPD misconduct findings and disciplinary decisions have been released by the S.I. District Attorney’s Office, providing a window into the inner workings of the Department and its unwillingness to hold police accountable for violations, as reported by Gothamist.

The release follows Tuesday’s decision by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals to allow the release of previously secret NYPD disciplinary records – a longstanding demand from police reform advocates.

“The lack of transparency around disciplinary records has for years prevented victims of police violence and harassment from knowing whether they are the first victim of that officer or the fiftieth,” said Corey Stoughton, Attorney-in-Charge of The Legal Aid Society’s Law Reform & Special Litigation Unit. “These records allow us to see the direct link between the failures in the NYPD’s disciplinary system, and the epidemic of police misconduct that communities have experienced.”
