LAS Demands Release of Incarcerated New Yorkers as COVID-19 Exposure Rate Soars

A new report issued by the NYC Board of Correction reveals that 60% of the city’s detainees have been exposed to COVID-19, according to the New York Daily News.

The report confirms the fears of prisoner’s rights advocates throughout the city, as infection rates of both inmates and staff have continued to rise in the cramped, unsanitary conditions of city jails and detention centers.

“The city is simply unable to mitigate the spread of this disease,” said Tina Luongo, Attorney-in-Charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at the Legal Aid Society. “The solution is to release all incarcerated New Yorkers immediately before more lives are lost.”
