LAS Condemns NYPD for Lack of Transparency, Calls for Full Repeal of Police Secrecy Law 50-A

The Legal Aid Society condemned the NYPD for its lack of transparency today and reaffirmed the need for Albany to repeal Police Secrecy Law 50-A as the Department announced that it will seek administrative charges against Officer Francisco Garcia for violently attacking Donni Right during a social distancing stop in Manhattan in early May.

“Minnesota is actually more transparent than New York with respect to police records,” Jennvine Wong, a staff attorney with the Cop Accountability Project at The Legal Aid Society, tells Gothamist.

“What’s gonna happen with NYPD misconduct charges when the news is not centered around police accountability issues? I don’t think that it really solves the larger issue, which is the lack of accountability and a lack of trust.”
