Listen: Bracing for the Post-Pandemic Medicaid Enrollment Decline

Rebecca Antar Novick and Erika Hanson, attorneys in The Legal Aid Society’s Health Law Unit, appeared on a recent episode of WNYC’s The Capitol Pressroom to discuss a spike in demand for Medicaid during the COVID-19 pandemic and what will happen as things return to normal.

Hanson and Novick explained that in addition to an increased need created by individuals losing their jobs, federal legislation protected those already on Medicaid from being kicked off during COVID-19. Those combined factors resulted in Medicaid enrollment in New York State growing from six to seven million over the course of the pandemic.

As the pandemic recedes, the attorneys advised making sure contact information is up to date with the agency, so recipients can be informed of when verifications and recertifications begin again.
