Listen: Brian Lehrer Talks Vacating Convictions Involving Corrupt Cops

On today’s episode of The Brian Lehrer Show, the host discussed a letter sent by The Legal Aid Society and a coalition of defender organizations calling on New York City’s five District Attorneys to vacate convictions where corrupt NYPD officers played an “essential role.”

The push for a more comprehensive vacation of convictions comes in the wake of the case of James Franco, a disgraced NYPD narcotics detective currently facing perjury charges for false claims he made about drug cases in order to obtain convictions.

The letter – co-signed by The Exoneration Project, The Innocence Project, The Bronx Defenders, Brooklyn Defender Services and many more – specifically urges the city’s five DA’s to vacate convictions in cases where the purported evidence of guilt was obtained or produced by 22 known corrupt former and active NYPD officers.

“Criminal convictions cannot rest on testimony or evidence allegedly obtained or produced by law enforcement officers engaged in misconduct connected to their duties and privileges as police officers,” the letter states. “We urge you to immediately take steps to identify and remedy all convictions caused by law enforcement officers convicted of crimes relating to their duties or who are otherwise incredible or unreliable.”
