Listen: The Scope of Evictions in New York State

Judith Goldiner, Attorney-in-Charge at The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Law Reform Unit appeared on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show to discuss the status of evictions in New York, now that the State’s moratorium has expired.

She explained that while mass evictions have not begun yet, a flood of cases have been brought, and warned that if the State legislature does not act, those evictions are coming.

Goldiner outlined two key pieces of legislation that are critical to keeping families in their homes and preventing a compounding crisis of homelessness.

The “Good Cause” eviction bill would require landlords to demonstrate a good reason for evicting tenants in non-rent-stabilized units. It would also protect tenants from exorbitant rent hikes and allow individuals to advocate for repairs without the fear of retaliation.

The Housing Access Voucher program would create a program similar to the federal Section 8 law, providing a rental subsidy for low-income New Yorkers which would allow them to stay in their homes.

“What we’re really seeing is a crisis of affordability in New York City,” she said “We need to make sure we have these long-term solutions to protect people.”
