LAS Calls for More Federal Support to Assist Struggling Tenants

The Legal Aid Society decried the Federal government’s lack of action for tenants who are struggling to pay rent and who will likely face eviction. So far this pandemic, Washington has only allocated funds to support corporate landlords, many companies accused of inhumane eviction practices.

Three of these companies are actually listed as among New York City’s 20 most prolific evictors for 2019, according to The Right to Counsel NYC Coalition, according to The Appeal.

“The government is bailing out corporate landlords, but there is still no bailout for tenants facing eviction with a massive rent bill looming over their head. Where are the government subsidies for millions of tenants who are suffering under crushing rental arrears?” said Jason Wu, Staff Attorney with the Harlem Community Law Office at The Legal Aid Society.
