New York Landlords and Tenants Ask Cuomo to Start Rent Relief Program

Maria Melchor, a paralegal casehandler at The Legal Aid Society, appeared on Univision pressing the Cuomo Administration for updates on New York’s Rent Relief Program.

The initiative, which was approved last April by the state legislature, includes funds for $ 2.4 billion, which would help families cover up to 15 months of rent. Undocumented immigrants behind with their income may also benefit from this program.

“We’re already in May and the state hasn’t shared any information or details [on the rollout of the rent relief program],” Melchor said. “We don’t want our clients to lose faith that help is coming.”

New York is one of only eight states that does not have a rent relief program operational; tenants and landlords have yet to receive a penny of the funds.
