Twyla Carter Named to Nonprofit Power 100 List

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of The Legal Aid Society has been named to City and State’s Nonprofit Power 100 list for the second year in a row.

The annual list recognizes influential leaders in New York’s nonprofits from government, advocacy, housing, children’s services, healthcare, human services, education, and beyond.

Since joining Legal Aid, Carter has overseen important victories such as a settlement that will ensure dental coverage for millions of New Yorkers and legislation that, once signed, will ensure continued connections between children in foster care with their birth families. She had also directed Legal Aid’s work defending New York City’s Right to Shelter and protecting incarcerated New Yorkers from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island.

Carter has worked tirelessly since joining the organization toward securing needed funding to significantly increase baseline salaries for all staff to ensure that the New Yorkers who rely on Legal Aid continue to have access to world-class legal representation.

Congratulations to Twyla, who ranks number two on this year’s list!
