Undergraduate & Graduate Students

The Legal Aid Society offers students the opportunity to work directly with attorneys, paralegals, investigators and staff on client cases. Internships are unpaid and can be part time or full time. Academic credit can be considered if your school offers that opportunity.

Legal Internships

The Legal Aid Society offers exceptional legal internships in the Civil, Criminal and Juvenile Rights Practices. We also attend Career Fairs and conduct On-Campus Interviews at local and nation law schools.

Application Deadlines

The application open dates and deadlines for fall, spring, and summer internships for the 2024-2025 term can be found below. It is recommended that first-year law students (1L) check the website in early December each year for internship opportunities and updates. All internship positions will be available for application from the specified open date. Fall and spring internships are part-time, while summer internships are full-time and typically last 10-12 weeks, depending on the schedule. Offers for fall, spring, and summer legal internships for both first-year (1L) and second-year (2L) students will be made on a rolling basis throughout each hiring period, so early application submissions are encouraged. Undergraduate Internships
The Legal Aid Society offers undergraduate internship opportunities based on unit need. Please visit this site periodically for updates. If an undergraduate position becomes available, it will be listed in our current internship opportunities list. We do not have an estimated time frame for when positions will become available.

Intern Investigator Program

We also offer an Intern Investigator Program that provides students interested in a career in law with an exciting, hands-on, in-the-field experience in criminal defense law.

Stipends & Benefits

All internships are unpaid positions. Interns may be eligible for financial assistance, public interest funding or academic credit through their law school These internships are also eligible for pro-bono credit, and interns can apply for the Howard Rossbach stipend provided by the Legal Aid Society.

Interns who meet the eligibility criteria have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. The Stipend was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach, Attorney-in-Chief of The Legal Aid Society (1950-1952, 1953-1955), whose mentorship encouraged young lawyers’ dedication to civic engagement through legal aid. The J. Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend, awarded through a lottery system, aims to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at The Legal Aid Society. To be considered for this stipend, interns must:

• Applicants must be enrolled as a degree seeking undergraduate or graduate student at any accredited institution
• Complete the J. Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application.
• Must ultimately be accepted to participate in an internship program at LAS
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must lack funding for their internship
• Must submit a statement reflecting the student’s strong interest in working at Legal Aid upon graduation
• To be eligible for the Summer 2024 award, please submit your form by April 1st. Recipients will be notified via email no later than mid-April

How to apply

To be considered for the J. Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend, simultaneously fill out the J. Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form during the submission of your internship application. Only one application per applicant per year is permitted. If more than 4 or 5 applicants are eligible, then recipients will be selected by lottery. Please do not submit multiple forms even if you are applying for multiple internships. Selected interns will be notified prior to the start of their internships. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
