The Legal Aid Society has joined a coalition of 50 labor groups in asking Congress to reject a proposal put forward by Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi that would circumvent new labor laws making it harder to treat workers as independent contractors, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Labor advocates say that if implemented, the proposal would shift unemployment costs onto the state while exploiting vulnerable, low-paid workers amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Rather than stand up for his employees, Mr. Khosrowshahi is seizing an unprecedented public health crisis to push forward a radical annihilation of our labor laws,” the letter from the labor groups reads. “He is expanding a business model that has undermined the quality of life for Uber drivers and other workers.”
