LAS Breaks Down the Earned Income Tax Credit

Shervon Small, Supervising Attorney for The Legal Aid Society’s Low-Income Taxpayer Unit, discussed the ins and outs of the Earned Income Tax Credit (or EITC) in a new City Limits article, describing it as “a financial boost for low- and middle-income workers, especially those with children, which can lead to a large tax refund.”

If you plan to apply for the EITC from previous years this year, Small suggests checking which centers operated by volunteers known as VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) are assisting with tax returns from previous years.

“Many VITA sites will only prepare for 2020 during tax time, but others will prepare for 2020 and the previous three years,” Small said, “so the taxpayer should check with the sites they are interested in visiting.”
