Josh Goldfein, from The Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Rights Project, recently appeared on the PIX11 News to discuss the influx of migrants in New York City, and practical solutions to housing those in need of shelter.
“Permanent housing is always the better option,” said Goldfein. “We can be doing a lot to move people, New Yorkers who have been in shelter for a long time, into permanent housing into apartments they can afford and stay in and move on with their lives.”
The City may be looking at unconventional options to deal with the flow of people, but Goldfein cautioned that they should only be used after other, more pragmatic options have been exhausted.
“If we could move people out of shelter and create more spaces there, we could use the hotels, we could the spaces that we have more efficiently then we wouldn’t have to get into more complicated options like cruise ships and summer camps, other places that are not designed for long term living,” he said.
