Speaker Carl Heastie has announced that the New York State Assembly will reconvene next week to resolve unfinished legislative business after a largely unproductive session.
After roughly six months of debate, lawmakers failed to advance “Good Cause” eviction legislation, the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP), or any other significant housing policy. Albany also was unable to act on key juvenile justice and foster care reforms including the #Right2RemainSilent, the Preserving Family Bonds Act, and legislation relating to reporting suspected child abuse. Many criminal justice reforms were also left on the table including the Treatment Not Jail and Communities Not Cages, comprehensive parole reform and more.
However, there are still critical actions the Assembly can take during this new session, the Legal Aid Society is calling on lawmakers to prioritize important legislation that has already passed the Senate, including the No Slavery in NY Act, legislation to increase student loan aid for attorneys serving the public interest, measures to preserve New York’s finite rent stabilized housing stock, foster care system reforms and more.
“Decisive and immediate action on these bills is especially needed as both the budget and subsequent weeks of session largely failed to advance a number of consequential legislation that our clients and the communities need and rightly deserve,” reads a statement from Legal Aid.
