The Legal Aid Society filed this class action lawsuit to ensure that single parents with children who receive public benefits are able to go to school and obtain the education and training that they need to transition to stable employment and economic security while satisfying their benefits’ work requirements. We entered into a settlement agreement with the City in 2003 in which the City agreed to conduct appropriate employability assessments and to honor, to the extent possible, a parent’s preference for education.
