The Legal Aid Society filed this class action lawsuit on behalf of nearly 400 households who had been displaced from their homes by Hurricane Sandy. The plaintiffs were housed by the City through the Hotel Program, which provided life-saving assistance to thousands of individuals who sought refuge through an evacuation facility after the storm or because of dangerous conditions in their homes. On May 31, 2013, the lawsuit successfully obtained a preliminary injunction that barred the termination of the program, and required the City to speed up the distribution of rental vouchers so as to assist evacuees in securing a home.
