In the depth of the Great Depression, The Legal Aid Society was forced to close the Harlem and Brooklyn offices, but service was maintained through the Manhattan office for residents of all boroughs. Law students from Columbia, New York Law, and NYU assisted with the nearly 44,000 civil cases handled this year.
