New Yorkers experiencing domestic violence will now have a new path to freedom. A new program will give free legal assistance to survivors seeking divorces, helping them take back control of their lives.
Divorce can be long and expensive in New York. Survivors of domestic violence are often victims of financial abuse, leaving them without the money to pay for an attorney. This program will change that.
By providing legal assistance to domestic violence survivors, we’re changing the playing field. Domestic violence is about power and control. Abusers thrive when they can keep their victims powerless. By giving survivors access to lawyers who can fight for them, we take that power and control away. We help survivors build equality and safety through the divorce process.
This program will allow survivors to escape abusive marriages and begin rebuilding their lives.
This program will allow survivors to escape abusive marriages and begin rebuilding their lives. It will give them the tools they need to move forward — tools like the ability to gain custody and support for their children, so they can thrive.
The Legal Aid Society is one of three agencies that received this grant, and one of two focused on creating this pilot project for domestic violence survivors in Manhattan. We will handle divorces in Manhattan for survivors who meet our income guidelines.
Clients must either live in Manhattan or have their case in Manhattan. Survivors can access our services by calling the Access to Benefits helpline 888-663-6880. Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This program will save lives — by giving survivors the power, protection, and support they need to finally be free.
