Listen: Lawmakers Eye "Clean Slate" for Formerly Incarcerated New Yorkers

Emma Goodman, a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society, was featured on an episode of The Capitol Pressroom to discuss a new bill that would clear the criminal records of people who have served their sentences.

The bill, which was introduced in the state Senate in January as part of a national campaign called Clean Slate, would help people overcome the barriers that past convictions pose to employment, housing and various benefits, supporters say.

“Any type of interaction with the police and the criminal system can affect you for the rest of your life,” said Goodman. “We’re talking about things like a record from when you are 14 years old. That obviously should not be something that hangs over your head for the rest of your life.”
