The Legal Aid Society’s litigation efforts to equip homeless shelters with reliable WiFi access for families and students grappling with remote learning was covered on this past Friday’s CBS Evening News broadcast.
Legal Aid first raised this issue with the City months ago, but the de Blasio Administration has shown little urgency in addressing the problem, refusing to offer a detailed timeline for the network to be upgraded and only saying that they hope to have it done by next summer – after the school year ends.
“The people who are living in shelters are in the demographic that has just been devastated by COVID,” Susan Horwitz, an attorney with The Legal Aid Society. “They are poor, they are Black and brown. They are people who are struggling with putting food on the table and staying housed every day.”
