LAS Again Debunks NYPD Claim Connecting Modest Rise in Shootings to Bail Reform

The Legal Aid Society is again called out discredited claims made by Police Commissioner Dermot Shea that have sought to tie New York city’s increase in crime to bail reform measures passed in 2019, as reported by the New York Daily News.

Advocates for criminal justice reform have repeatedly pushed back on Shea’s claims, saying there is no evidence linking bail reform and the city’s crime increase. The NYPD’s own numbers even debunked this theory, which has been widely reported including by conservative news outlets such as the New York Post.

“In the absence of evidence or logic, Shea continues to blame reform, although this baseless theory has been completely debunked numerous times, including by the NYPD’s own data,” said Marie Ndiaye, Supervising Attorney of the Decarceration Project at the Legal Aid Society.
