LAS, Advocates Secure New Law Ending License Suspension for Traffic Debt

The Legal Aid Society applauded new legislation that ends New York State’s widespread practice of suspending driver’s licenses for traffic debt, which goes into effect this week.

Together with a coalition of advocates, Legal Aid pushed for the Driver’s License Suspension Reform Act (DSLRA), which includes a number of changes in how New York handles debt brought about by unpaid traffic fines and fees, as well as unanswered and missed summonses.

The law aims to break the cycle of debt and arrests created by suspended licenses.

To find out more about the DSLRA and how it applies to your suspension, please see this FAQ.
